Powerside Acquires Electrotek to Unite PQube With PQView

Key Facts
  • Powerside acquired Electrotek Concepts in March 2025, combining PQube 3 hardware (80,000 installations, 50 countries) with PQView analytics (80+ utilities, 5 continents).
  • PQube 3 is IEC 61000-4-30 Class A certified; Powerside reports 15,000+ completed power corrections projects.
  • PQView is device-agnostic, ingesting data from analyzers, relays, fault recorders, smart meters, and SCADA; includes QubeScan cloud platform.
  • Electrotek's additional tools include PQDiffractor and FaultPoint for fault analysis across utility and industrial customers.
  • EPRI estimates poor power quality costs U.S. industry $145 billion annually; deal positions combined company for utility grid modernization programs.

Powerside acquired Electrotek Concepts in March 2025, combining Powerside’s PQube 3 power quality analyzers, deployed in 80,000 installations across 50 countries, with Electrotek’s PQView data management platform used by more than 80 utilities on five continents.

What the Acquisition Includes

Electrotek Concepts, founded in Knoxville, Tennessee, built PQView as a device-agnostic data concentrator that ingests measurements from power quality analyzers, relays, fault recorders, smart meters, and SCADA systems. The platform includes QubeScan for cloud-based monitoring and PQDiffractor and FaultPoint for fault analysis. Powerside, based in Berkeley, California, sells the PQube 3 under IEC 61000-4-30 Class A certification and reports more than 15,000 completed power corrections projects. The combined company covers the full measurement stack from field-deployed sensor to enterprise analytics. Electrotek’s installed base at municipal, cooperative, and investor-owned utilities across the Americas, Europe, and Australasia expands the distribution channel for Powerside hardware in regulated utility programs. GMC Instruments Group held Electrotek prior to the sale.

Critical Perspective

The integration challenge for Powerside is substantial. PQView was designed as a device-agnostic platform, meaning its value proposition rested on supporting hardware from multiple vendors. Positioning it primarily as the analytics layer for Powerside’s own PQube 3 hardware risks narrowing its appeal to the utilities that adopted it precisely because it was vendor-neutral. Utilities with mixed fleets of power quality analyzers from competitors including Dranetz, Elspec, and Fluke Networks will need assurance that PQView continues to support third-party hardware on equal terms. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, and neither company published integration timelines or details on how the two development teams will be consolidated.

Why It Matters

Utilities managing distributed energy resources, EV charging load, and rising penetration of inverter-based generation face growing pressure to document power quality continuously at the distribution level. EPRI estimates poor power quality costs U.S. industry 45 billion annually in equipment damage, lost production, and downtime. Historically, power quality instrumentation and analytics were sold separately, with utilities assembling data workflows from hardware from one vendor and software from another. The Powerside-Electrotek combination positions the merged company to sell an integrated stack, from IEC 61000-4-30 Class A metering hardware to cloud analytics, at a time when utilities are deploying grid modernization programs that require standardized, continuous power quality documentation across large numbers of distribution feeders.
