ERCOT Says Four Data Center and Crypto Groups Failed a Voltage Test

ERCOT found four groups of large electricity customers, including data centers and crypto-mining operations, that abruptly cut power during a grid voltage test instead of riding through the disturbance. The grid operator laid out the failures in a May 21, 2026 report that Reuters reported on June 5. Any one of the four could drop more than 5,000 megawatts at once under the wrong fault conditions. That is roughly what the city of Boston pulls from the grid on a normal day, and ERCOT now puts the problem near the top of its reliability worry list for the Texas summer.

What ERCOT Found

Voltage ride-through is the ability to stay online through the brief sag in voltage that follows a fault somewhere on the network. Conventional generators do it. Four of the large-load groups ERCOT tested did not, and tripped offline. The operator screened about 20 gigawatts of customers in its interconnection pipeline, including eight projects worth roughly 3.9 gigawatts that want to start drawing power before July 1. The pattern is not new. ERCOT has counted at least 26 separate disconnects since 2023 in which data centers or crypto miners dropped off the grid rather than absorb a routine disturbance.

Why It Matters

When a gigawatt-scale load vanishes in a fraction of a second, the generators feeding it suddenly have nowhere to send their output, and frequency spikes. Do that during a tight summer afternoon and the imbalance risks spreading. Texas has already started building guardrails. Senate Bill 6 gives ERCOT the power to shed big loads in an emergency, and the operator is writing interconnection rules that demand ride-through compliance before a site energizes. The math is what worries planners: record summer peaks, 20 GW of large load in the queue, and four loads that each behave like a 5,000 MW circuit breaker waiting to flip.

Critical Perspective

The 5,000 MW number is a worst case, not a forecast. ERCOT has weathered all 26 earlier disconnects without a blackout, and it has not named the four offenders. Engineers in the data center business make a fair point that this is solved technology. IEEE 2800 and NERC rules already spell out ride-through, so the failures trace back to operators who skimped on protective relay settings. The real test is timing. Roughly 3.9 gigawatts wants on the grid before July 1, and ERCOT has not said whether it will hold up any site that flunks the voltage screen.
