Venture Global Sets a $17.2 Billion Ceiling on Up to 16 Gas Power Islands From GE Vernova and Baker Hughes
- Power islands: Up to 16 units of 720 MW
- Ceiling if all orders proceed: $17.2 billion
- Compute capacity pathway: Up to 10 GW by 2034
- Existing Island Mode generation: 4.5 gigawatts
Venture Global, the Arlington, Va. LNG exporter, announced frame agreements with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes on Oct. 15, 2026. They cover up to 16 new power island units of 720 MW each. The units would be combined cycle gas turbines. The company signed the deals on Oct. 9, according to its Form 8-K filing. Venture Global expects to place its first power island purchase order by the end of 2026.
The 8-K puts a ceiling on the deal. Suppose Venture Global proceeds with all purchase orders under the power agreement and a companion GE Grid Solutions agreement. Then the total payable would be about $17.2 billion, including reservation fees. That figure is subject to adjustment.
What Is Firm and What Is Optional
Most of the 16 units are options, not orders. Beyond the first island, Venture Global signed a definitive reservation agreement with GE Vernova for eight of the remaining 15 power islands. It expects purchase orders for those eight to start in early 2027. Outside the reservation fees and that reserved capacity, the 8-K says no party has binding obligations. That changes only when they sign more reservation agreements or purchase orders.
GE Vernova reserves factory capacity only after a reservation agreement and a fee. That right expires in stages from October 2027 to October 2029 if Venture Global does not use it. Scheduled deliveries run through 2034 at the latest. Baker Hughes said deliveries are scheduled for 2028 through 2034. It will also supply control and electrical integration equipment, including E-houses.
The GE Grid Solutions agreement covers power transformers and gas insulated switchgear for up to 21 power island projects. Venture Global signed five reservation agreements under it for the first five equipment packages. Purchase orders for those start in late 2026.
The Data Center Angle
Venture Global already has 6 power islands ordered, in construction or operating across its LNG plants. That is about 4.5 gigawatts of gas-fired generation that runs behind the meter in what the company calls Island Mode. Its LNG projects are Calcasieu Pass, Plaquemines LNG and CP2 LNG in Louisiana.
The company said the new units give it a path to up to 10 GW of compute capacity by the end of 2034. The sites would be ones it owns or controls. That target depends on customer commitments and market demand, Reuters reported. CEO Mike Sabel described the plan as “a vertically integrated AI utility.” Venture Global said the power would put no added demand on the public grid or public water utilities. It said it will file its first permit applications this week.
Why It Matters
The deal shows one way a large-load developer locks in gas turbine supply years ahead. It pays reservation fees instead of placing firm orders. The headline is 16 units, but the binding part today is one expected order and eight reserved slots. Grid planners should watch for the first purchase order and the permit filings. Those will show whether the 10 GW of compute moves from a pathway to a project.
Critical Perspective
Sixteen units of 720 MW each add up to about 11.5 GW of gas generation. Today, Venture Global expects only one purchase order and holds eight more reserved slots. In April, MGRID reported that 56 GW of the 100 GW GE Vernova gas backlog were slot reservations, not firm orders. A reservation holds a factory slot, not a turbine. Venture Global loses its reserved slots in stages from October 2027 to October 2029 if it does not use them. Reuters reported that the 10 GW compute target depends on customer commitments and market demand. In Pennsylvania, PPL and Blackstone reserved more than 5 GW of turbines. PPL expects its first units in 2031 to 2032. Which data center customer will sign for this power before the first slots lapse in October 2027?
