Enphase Opens Pre-Orders for an 80 kWh Commercial Battery That Stacks to 2 MWh

Enphase Energy opened U.S. pre-orders on August 18 for the IQ Battery C80, the first commercial battery the company has ever sold. The unit holds 80 kWh of usable energy and pushes up to 40 kVA of continuous power from one enclosure. Sites that need more can stack the units to 2 MWh. Enphase is aiming the product at demand charges. Those charges dominate commercial power bills. A single afternoon peak sets the rate for the whole month. Shipments do not start until the first half of 2027.
The C80 ships in two configurations. A 208 V version rated at 33 kVA targets multifamily buildings and small commercial sites. A 480 V version rated at 40 kVA is meant for larger facilities. Both are AC-coupled, with the battery packs and microinverters built into the same cabinet rather than wired together on site. The cells are lithium iron phosphate. Enphase rates the enclosure from -22 F to 131 F and lists UL 3141 and UL 9540A certification.
The 480 V units pair with the IQ9N-3P and IQ9S-3P microinverters. The 208 V units take the IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P. Beyond demand charge management, Enphase lists time-of-use shifting, solar self-consumption, grid services and virtual power plant participation. The system also retrofits behind third-party inverters, which matters for buildings that already have solar from another vendor. Active air cooling, fire detection and an emergency stop are built in.
Enphase says it will build the C80 in domestic factories and meet FEOC requirements. The unit carries a 15-year limited warranty. Check both claims against the shipping product in 2027, not the pre-order page in 2026.
What’s Genuinely New
Enphase is late here. The company built its business on residential microinverters and home batteries. Other vendors spent those years selling into commercial and industrial sites. The C80 is not a new chemistry or a new price floor, and Enphase has not claimed it is.
What is actually different is the architecture. Most commercial batteries in this size class put a central inverter in front of a string of packs. One inverter fault then takes the whole asset offline. Enphase instead carried its per-module microinverter approach into the commercial range. That spreads the conversion across many small units inside the cabinet. The 80 kWh to 2 MWh ladder is the other real change. It lets a building start at one cabinet and grow without redesigning the electrical room.
Competitors are moving on the same segment from a different direction. Honeywell and LS Electric announced a rival effort in October 2025. The two plan a grid- and building-aware modular storage system for commercial buildings, data centers and critical facilities. It pairs LS Electric hardware with Honeywell Forge control software. That partnership leads with software and with switchgear for data center operators. Enphase is leading with hardware it already manufactures at volume. Neither company has published a capacity price.
Why It Matters
Enphase did not disclose pricing, and that is the number the decision turns on. Payback drives every demand charge project. Without a dollar figure per kWh, a facility manager cannot rank the C80 against an incumbent quote. The specification sheet alone does not settle it.
The timing deserves the same caution. Pre-orders opened in August 2026 for hardware that ships no earlier than the first half of 2027. Anyone budgeting against a 2026 utility bill is buying a promise, not equipment. Sites with a demand charge problem this year should keep quoting shipping products. Treat the C80 as a 2027 line item. The useful move now is to pull twelve months of interval data. Find out what a peak actually costs. That number decides whether 80 kWh is the right first step or far too small.
Critical Perspective
Run the arithmetic on the spec sheet and the entry product looks small for the problem it names. One C80 discharges at 40 kVA. A commercial building whose bill is set by a 300 kW peak therefore sheds about 13 percent of that peak from a single cabinet. Demand charges are billed on the highest interval of the month, so a partial shave moves the bill much less than the capacity number suggests. Enphase answers this with the 2 MWh ladder, which means a serious demand charge project buys many cabinets rather than one. How does that stacked cost compare with a single central-inverter system of the same energy, once the extra enclosures and interconnections are counted?
The pre-order itself deserves scrutiny. Enphase is collecting commitments roughly nine months before hardware moves, for a product with no published price. That is a useful demand signal for a company whose growth has come from residential microinverters, and it is a weak basis for a capital plan. Honeywell and LS Electric are approaching the same buildings with control software rather than a catalogue part, and neither camp has shown a delivered commercial installation. Buyers should ask what happens to a pre-order position if the 2027 date slips.
