LG Energy Solution Starts Lansing LFP Production, Moving 80% of Its Global ESS Capacity to North America

LG Energy Solution started battery production in Lansing, Michigan on August 18, 2026. The plant sits on 226 acres and it makes lithium iron phosphate cells for grid storage. At full scale the site will turn out more than 35 GWh of cells a year. LG has put more than $2 billion into the project since 2022.

The company reads the opening as a supply-chain milestone. By the end of 2026, LG says 80 percent of its global energy storage cell capacity will sit in North America. That is a statement about where LG builds. It is not a claim about who supplies the North American market.

What the Plant Actually Makes

Lansing runs two cell chemistries side by side. LFP cells go to grid storage, where LG Energy Solution Vertech packages them into systems. NMC cells go to Toyota, starting with the 2027 Highlander EV. Running both lines in one building hedges LG against a slump in either market.

This is LG’s second Michigan plant. The first is in Holland. About 900 people work at Lansing today, and LG expects 1,700 at full capacity. The company projects a Michigan headcount above 3,300 by the end of 2026. That would place LG among the state’s 50 largest employers.

The 50 GWh Number

LG puts its North American LFP cell capacity above 50 GWh by the end of 2026. That total spans five facilities. Lansing supplies the largest single block of it. The figure is a nameplate target rather than shipped product, and LG did not publish an output rate for any of the five plants.

Why It Matters

Domestic LFP cells decide which storage projects qualify for federal content rules and which ones do not. Developers have bought LFP from China for a decade. A 35 GWh domestic line changes the arithmetic on domestic-content adders. It also shortens a supply chain that ocean freight and tariffs have made hard to schedule.

Watch the ramp, not the ribbon. Nameplate capacity and shipped cells are different numbers, and the gap between them has embarrassed several US battery plants since 2023. Ask LG for Lansing’s monthly output in mid-2027 before treating 35 GWh as available supply.

Critical Perspective

LG published nameplate figures and a share statistic, not shipped cells. The 80 percent number describes where LG’s own capacity sits. It says nothing about how much of the North American storage market LG supplies, and read as market share it flatters the company by a wide margin.

The 50 GWh North American LFP total spans five facilities that LG did not rate individually. Lansing’s own 35 GWh applies at full scale, and LG did not date full scale. The plant employs about 900 of a planned 1,700 people today, which puts the ramp closer to its start than its finish.

US battery plants have missed ramp schedules repeatedly since 2023. The test for Lansing is monthly cell output through 2027, measured against the 35 GWh annual rate. Acreage and investment totals do not answer that question.
