Enerflex Books Over One Gigawatt of Behind-the-Meter Gas Generation for an Unnamed North American Data Center
- New award: more than one gigawatt of gas-fired generation
- Behind-the-meter backlog: exceeds 1.75 gigawatts
- Earlier award (Oct. 1): approximately 450 megawatts
- Engineered Systems investment: approximately $100 million
Enerflex Ltd. has won a contract to build more than one gigawatt of behind-the-meter natural gas-fired power generation for a large North American data center development. The Calgary-based company announced the award on Oct. 13, 2026. With other recent awards, Enerflex says its behind-the-meter gas generation backlog now exceeds 1.75 gigawatts. Deliveries extend through 2028. Enerflex did not name the customer or the site.
What Enerflex Will Build
Enerflex will design, engineer, fabricate and assemble the generation units. The company calls them low emission. Its North American manufacturing operations will do the work. The backlog figure also counts an award of approximately 450 megawatts that Enerflex announced on Oct. 1, 2026. Yahoo Finance notes that the new award alone is more than twice that size.
Enerflex has authorized approximately $100 million of investments in its Engineered Systems facilities and capabilities. Of that total, $15 million sits in its 2026 capital expenditure guidance. The company also points to later work in commissioning, installation and after-market services.
Why It Matters
Chief executive Paul Mahoney said demand continues to grow for reliable prime power that does not require a grid connection. He tied that demand to AI and digital infrastructure. Yahoo Finance reports that the order is for a single data center.
The order also changes the size of the business. Business News Today reports that Enerflex ended the second quarter with approximately $1.45 billion of Engineered Systems backlog. The company said then that its distributed power opportunity pipeline exceeded seven gigawatts. Investors reacted fast. Enerflex shares rose 13% on the day, according to Yahoo Finance. CIBC upgraded the stock to Outperformer from Neutral with a $35 target.
What the Release Does Not Say
Enerflex gave no dollar value for the award. It did not name the customer, the site or the state. The release does not say whether the units use turbines or engines, and it gives no unit count. It offers no emissions figure to support the “low emission” label. Deliveries run through 2028, but the release gives no date for the data center to take power.
Readers should treat the 1.75-gigawatt backlog as generating capacity, not revenue. Business News Today makes the same point: without a contract value, the gigawatt figure does not convert to a dollar estimate.
Critical Perspective
Enerflex has added more than 1 GW of gas generation to its backlog. It gave no dollar value, no customer and no site. In July, Everllence booked 24 gas engines with 480 MW of output for an off-grid US hyperscale data center. It also did not name the buyer. Fuel supply is the first risk that the release leaves out. Oracle sent a force majeure notice on its 2.45 GW Project Jupiter campus after its gas pipeline slipped to February 2027. Air permits are the second risk. New Jersey fined a Vineland data center $1.07 million for 62 gas generators that ran without permits. Enerflex calls its units “low emission” but publishes no emissions figure. Deliveries run through 2028, and the release does not say when the data center needs power. Who holds the gas supply contract and the air permit for 1 GW of generation at an unnamed site?
