DOE Picks Princeton NuEnergy for a $50 Million Grant to Build a 3,000-Tonne Cathode Recycling Plant in Georgia

The U.S. Department of Energy selected Princeton NuEnergy for a $50 million grant on August 20, 2026, to build a lithium-ion cathode recycling plant in Commerce, Georgia. The company adds $60 million of its own money, which brings the project to $110 million. The plant will process 3,000 tonnes of nickel-based battery manufacturing scrap each year. Princeton NuEnergy expects 70 full-time manufacturing jobs and about 100 construction jobs.
What Is Being Built
The facility runs the Princeton NuEnergy Cathode-to-Cathode process. That process uses low-temperature plasma-assisted separation. DOE describes the method as recovering nickel-containing cathode material with low-temperature plasma. Conventional recyclers dissolve a battery down to metal salts and then rebuild cathode powder from those salts. Direct recycling skips that teardown and returns the cathode material to a cell maker in usable form.
Chief Strategy Officer Stephen Snyder framed the choice in value terms. “Direct recycling allows us to retain more of the value already engineered into cathode materials rather than breaking them down,” he said.
The feedstock matters as much as the process. The plant takes manufacturing scrap from cell plants, not end-of-life packs pulled from vehicles. Scrap arrives with a known chemistry and no field damage. The separation step therefore starts from a cleaner input than a mixed recycling stream.
Why It Matters
The award belongs to Round 3 of the Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing grants. Section 40207(c) of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act authorized that program. DOE put $500 million into seven projects in this round through its Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation. DOE details five of them on its own program page. Nth Cycle takes $100 million. Princeton NuEnergy, Arcanum Ventures, Elevated Materials and Coreshell Technologies take $50 million each.
Grid storage sits downstream of this supply chain. Cathode active material is the cost center in a nickel-based cell. Every utility-scale battery buyer competes for the same material that vehicle makers buy. A domestic plant that returns cathode powder straight to a cell line shortens that queue by 3,000 tonnes a year.
Two limits deserve attention. First, DOE selected the company to enter award negotiations. No money has moved yet, and the final terms stay open. Second, 3,000 tonnes a year is a first-of-a-kind line, not a supply-chain fix. A single 20 GWh cell plant generates scrap on a scale that dwarfs one 3,000-tonne recycler.
Critical Perspective
The feedstock choice cuts both ways. Manufacturing scrap is the easy input, and it exists because cell plants throw away a share of what they make. Yield rates at new plants improve year over year, so the supply this facility depends on shrinks as its customers get better at their jobs. A recycler sized to scrap is sized to somebody else’s mistakes.
Nothing in the announcement names an offtake partner. Cathode-to-cathode only pays if a cell maker accepts the recovered powder against its own material spec, and that qualification takes cycles of testing that no press release has reported. Direct recycling has sat one plant away from commercial scale for most of a decade.
The money is also not money yet. DOE selected the company to enter award negotiations, and the $60 million company share still has to appear alongside the federal $50 million. Ask again when the first tonne of qualified cathode ships.
