The MCS1200 is the first 1-megawatt-plus production charger from a top-tier global vendor to incorporate an integrated SST as a designed-in component rather than a separately purchased add-on.
What the MCS Spec Enables
The MCS specification was finalized by CharIN, the European-led charging-standards consortium, in 2023 and ratified by SAE International in early 2024. MCS allows charging at up to 3.75 megawatts (1500 volts DC at 3000 amps), although early commercial products including the MCS1200 implement at 1.2 megawatts. The site-economics argument is the more important commercial case. Fleet operators electrifying truck depots have been bottlenecked not by charger cost but by utility-side infrastructure: distribution transformer lead times of 100 weeks or more, substation upgrade costs of $1 million to $3 million per site, and permitting delays of 12 to 24 months. The MCS1200 collapses much of that interconnection workload into a single chassis the operator owns and installs.
Competitive Context
ABB is one of two companies shipping or imminently shipping a commercial megawatt-class fleet charger with integrated SST. WattEV unveiled its own 12-15 kilovolt SST for megawatt truck charging in October 2025, with production-ready units expected in 2026. The two products will compete directly in the US heavy-duty fleet electrification market through 2026 and 2027.
