Crusoe and Aalo Target a 50 MWe Reactor Pod for AI Data Centers, With a 10 MWe Demo at Idaho in 2027

Crusoe and Aalo Atomics announced a partnership on July 30, 2026. The plan puts a nuclear reactor behind an AI data center. Crusoe will install one of its Spark modular data centers at Idaho National Laboratory in 2027 as a proof of concept. Aalo will power it. Both firms then target Aalo Pods and 50 MWe reactor plants across Crusoe sites by the end of 2029.
The demonstration unit is small. Aalo rates Aalo-X, the sodium-cooled reactor it built at Idaho, at 10 MWe. Aalo calls it a 30 MWth design. POWER Magazine and Data Center Dynamics both report a different machine for the commercial product. They describe the Aalo Pod as five 10 MWe Aalo-1 reactors behind one turbine, for 50 MWe total.
What the Announcement Does Not Say
Neither company published an IT load for the Idaho Spark unit. Neither published a dollar figure or a power purchase agreement. Neither named a licensing milestone beyond the reactor itself. The announcement covers a partnership and a demonstration date. It does not cover a contract to deliver electricity at a price.
Aalo does hold a real hardware result. Chief executive Matt Loszak said the company is “the only nuclear technology company to design and build a nuclear reactor fueled to produce 10MW of electricity.” Aalo reached criticality under the Department of Energy Reactor Pilot Program. The company says that put it among four firms to hit the program schedule.
Cully Cavness, co-founder and president of Crusoe, framed the deal around power that is “reliable, abundant, clean and at scale.”
Why It Matters
The size gap is the number to watch. One 50 MWe Pod serves a fraction of what a large AI campus draws. Hyperscaler power deals this year run to hundreds of megawatts. A 2027 demonstration at 10 MWe proves a pairing, not a supply.
The framing still matters for operators who plan on-site power. Reactors of 10 MWe to 50 MWe compete with reciprocating engines and aeroderivative turbines. They do not compete with a nuclear station. Reaching 1 GW at 50 MWe per Pod takes twenty Pods. The Idaho run will show whether the pairing works, and how fast a second unit follows.
The 2029 target is the real test. Hitting it means going from one reactor at a national laboratory to Pods at commercial sites in about two years. The announcement does not describe the licensing path. Aalo and Crusoe have named a date. They have not named a customer site, a price, or a regulator who has approved a build outside Idaho.
Critical Perspective
The announcement dates the hardware and the intent, not the electricity. There is no IT load, no price, no power purchase agreement and no named commercial site. A partnership plus a demonstration year is the lightest commitment either firm could make public, and both keep every commercial term private. Judge it against what a signed offtake would have disclosed.
The Loszak claim also needs reading closely. He says Aalo is the only company to design and build a reactor “fueled to produce 10MW of electricity.” Fueled is doing the work in that sentence. Criticality under the Reactor Pilot Program is a genuine milestone, and it is not the same as running a plant at rated output into a paying load. Aalo-X has not yet done the second thing.
The arithmetic is the hardest part. One Pod is 50 MWe, so a gigawatt campus needs twenty of them, sited, licensed and built. The 2029 target compresses that into roughly two years from a single unit at a national laboratory, and the announcement names no regulator who has approved a build anywhere else. A demonstration that works in 2027 still leaves the fleet question open.
