Sunrun Will Supply Voltus With Home Battery Capacity for AI Data Centers in PJM and MISO

Sunrun agreed on August 17, 2026 to supply Voltus with energy capacity drawn from its residential solar and battery systems. The two companies point that capacity at AI data centers in the PJM and MISO markets. Voltus sells the arrangement through its Bring Your Own Capacity program, which it shortens to BYOC. Neither company disclosed how many megawatts Sunrun will provide. Sunrun described the commitment as a portion of its installed systems. Latitude Media put it at many megawatts. The nearest public benchmark is the Google deal Voltus signed earlier in 2026. That one runs up to 100 MW of accredited distributed capacity a year in PJM, across three years. Sunrun Chief Executive Mary Powell said meeting demand growth requires maximizing every electron available across the country. Voltus Chief Executive Dana Guernsey said BYOC turns distributed resources into capacity the grid is able to count on.
BYOC lets a large load bring its own flexible capacity to an interconnection request. Voltus orchestrates batteries, smart thermostats and other distributed devices. It then cuts demand when the grid calls for it. Voltus launched its first BYOC product for data centers in the fall of 2025 with Cloverleaf Infrastructure. It later added Octopus Energy US across PJM, MISO, New York and California. Sunrun adds Illinois territory inside PJM and MISO.
Why It Matters
The missing megawatt figure is the story here. A capacity commitment without a number is a sales channel, not a grid resource. The Google deal named 100 MW, a term of three years and the word accredited. This one names none of the three. Accreditation is exactly where residential batteries lose value, because an RTO credits what it expects to get at the system peak rather than what the nameplate says.
Fleet size is not accredited capacity either. Sunrun, Tesla and Renew Home separately claim 16.8 GW across a combined program, and that figure describes installed equipment in homes. It is not what PJM would count in a capacity auction. Latitude Media reported that wholesale rules still need to change before residential solar and storage injections get credited accurately. Until that happens, the megawatts a hyperscaler pays for and the megawatts an RTO recognizes are two different numbers. For data center developers, BYOC is a route around an interconnection queue rather than a substitute for generation.
What Happens Next
Watch for Sunrun to attach a megawatt number to this agreement in a quarterly filing or an RTO docket. Watch the accreditation treatment as well. Latitude Media reported that the PJM framework holds room for more than 10 GW of flexible capacity, which sets the ceiling this deal is measured against. The named counterparties matter too, since Voltus has not said which hyperscalers sit behind the Sunrun volumes.
Critical Perspective
Voltus named 100 MW, a three-year term and the word accredited when Google signed. Here all three are missing, and that absence is not a rounding detail. PJM credits capacity on what it expects a resource to deliver at the system peak, so nameplate and accredited value diverge sharply for four-hour residential batteries. Which of those two numbers is Sunrun actually selling to a hyperscaler?
A second question sits underneath the first. A home battery serves the household that paid for it before it serves anyone else. When a hyperscaler has bought capacity and a storm arrives the same evening, who holds the call on that battery, and what does Sunrun owe Voltus if the fleet underdelivers? The 16.8 GW that Sunrun, Tesla and Renew Home cite describes equipment installed in homes, not a resource an RTO has agreed to count. Until a megawatt figure reaches a filing or a docket, the honest reading is a sales channel into PJM and MISO rather than firm capacity.
