Frontier Power Closes $263 Million and Buys the 200 MW, 800 MWh Blanquilla Battery in Nueces County, Texas

Key Facts
  • Equity raised: $263 million
  • Blanquilla rating: 200 MW / 800 MWh, four hours
  • Eos purchase order: $100 million for Phase 1
  • Capacity Reservation Agreement: 2 GWh
  • Expected online: December 2027

Frontier Power USA closed a $263 million equity raise on August 5 and used part of it to buy the Blanquilla battery project in Nueces County, Texas. Blanquilla is rated 200 MW and 800 MWh, a four-hour system. Cerberus Capital Management put in $100 million. Eos Energy Enterprises put in about $113 million. Hudson Bay Capital Management put in $50 million. Frontier bought the project from Stella Energy Solutions. It then placed a $100 million purchase order with Eos for Phase 1. The project is expected online in December 2027.

Why It Matters

Read the cap table before the capacity number. Eos supplied about $113 million of the $263 million, and Frontier then handed Eos a $100 million order. The battery vendor is financing its own customer. That structure books revenue for Eos and puts the same risk on one balance sheet twice. It also shows what the long-duration market still lacks, which is a buyer that arrives with outside money. Watch whether the remaining three Stella projects close on third-party capital or on more vendor equity.

What Frontier Bought

Blanquilla came out of a framework Frontier signed with Stella. That framework covered four projects totalling about 230 MW and 920 MWh. Blanquilla is the largest of the four. The purchase order sits under a 2 GWh Capacity Reservation Agreement the two companies signed earlier. Frontier says it has converted 1,280 MWh of usable storage capacity so far. It puts about 5 GWh more under development and a wider pipeline near 16 GWh.

The Technology Choice

Blanquilla will use Eos Z3 zinc systems rather than lithium iron phosphate. Zinc chemistry sidesteps the fire codes and thermal management that dominate lithium siting fights in Texas. It also carries a shorter commercial track record at grid scale. ERCOT already runs a large lithium fleet with well understood costs. At four hours, Blanquilla lands in the same product bracket as those plants and will be dispatched against them.

Critical Perspective

Eos supplied about $113 million of the $263 million raise and then received a $100 million order from the company it had just funded. Fluence took the opposite route on Avantus Rexford 2, supplying batteries to a developer that had raised its capital from banks first. SunEdison built the same kind of circular demand through the TerraForm yieldcos it controlled, and it filed for bankruptcy in 2016. If the remaining three Stella projects also need Eos equity to close, what is the 800 MWh order actually worth to Eos shareholders?
