BrightNight Acquires 6 GW Western US Development Portfolio

Key Facts
  • Acquired Portfolio Size: 6 GW
  • Original JV Portfolio Size: 15 GW
  • Projects Operational or Under Construction from JV: 1.1 GW
  • Corporate Credit Facility: $850 million
  • Box Canyon Project Size: 300 MW

BrightNight announced on April 21, 2026, its acquisition of Cordelio Power’s ownership interest in their joint venture’s development portfolio, adding 6 GW of solar and battery storage projects across western US markets. This transaction positions BrightNight to independently advance, finance, construct, and operate these projects.

What Was Acquired

The acquired assets stem from a joint venture formed in 2020 between BrightNight and Cordelio Power, which originally comprised a 15 GW development portfolio. Prior to this deal, the JV had brought 1.1 GW of projects into operations or construction. BrightNight now assumes full control of the remaining 6 GW development pipeline. Four project-level assets will remain under the JV’s ownership: Box Canyon, a 300 MW solar project in Arizona that is operational; Greenwater, a 200 MW / 800 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) under construction in Pierce County, Washington; Pioneer, a 300 MW solar and 300 MW / 1,200 MWh BESS project under construction in Arizona; and Biglow 1, a fully contracted 125 MW solar and 125 MW / 600 MWh BESS project.

Why It Matters

The acquisition significantly expands BrightNight’s presence in western US power markets, which are experiencing rapid growth and increasing demand for reliable, dispatchable clean energy. The 6 GW of solar and storage projects are located in states including Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Utah, California, Colorado, and Wyoming. This move aligns with the growing need for grid stability and the integration of renewable resources to meet decarbonization targets. BrightNight’s focus on integrated solar and storage, including its Energeist™ hybrid power systems, addresses the challenge of connecting large loads to the grid reliably. The company’s recent closing of an $850 million corporate credit facility supports this growth strategy.

Critical Perspective

While BrightNight highlights its strengthened position and commitment to customers, the transaction marks the dissolution of a partnership that aimed for 15 GW. With 1.1 GW operational or under construction from the original JV, the question remains: what drove the decision to unwind the partnership now, and what are the specific financial terms of Cordelio Power’s exit from the 6 GW development pipeline? The success of BrightNight’s independent execution of these projects will be a key metric going forward.
